STATEMENT REGARDING BIGOTED SIGN VANDALISM

July 22, 2010

“I am deeply disappointed and disgusted by the hateful and bigoted attacks directed at me and my campaign for Congress.

“Bigotry cannot be tolerated. It’s always wrong regardless of the circumstance and this most recent example only reinforces my profound, personal commitment to equality for everyone.

“Serving our entire community has always been my goal and I am committed to continuing my service to my home town and neighbors. I will not allow the mean spirited work of the narrow minded to distract me from this campaign or drag the focus away from what this district and our nation need.”

Almost two months into what has become the nation’s worst oil spill, our government needs to take action. The horrific damage being done to our environment will last for decades. But we can’t wait another day to start to address it.

Were I in Congress, here are just some of the measures for which I would push:

**Ban off-shore drilling in Florida

**Develop alternative clean energy sources

**Create incentives encouraging the expansion of the renewable energy industry

Join Me in Taking Action!

On Saturday, June 26, I’ll join hundreds of other South Floridians on Miami Beach at 5th Street. At noon, we’ll all form a line in the sand, join hands, and show our unity in opposing off-shore drilling in Florida.

Email me at scott@scott-galvin.com if you would like to join my campaign at this event! We’ll even give you a Galvin Campaign t-shirt to wear.

My History of Standing for the Environment

I’ve been involved in environmental causes long before this oil disaster.

In 2007, I initiated the creation of the Arch Creek East Environmental Preserve. My legislation permanently locked down 13-acres of bayfront property as a nature habitat. It can never be developed. We’re working to add additional native plantings and restoring its mangroves.

The Sierra Club of Miami in 2001 awarded me their Environmental Leadership Award for similar legislation protecting the Enchanted Forest Park. In other efforts, I’ve advocated to keep Arch Creek Park open and was a member of the Friends of the Oleta River organization beginning twenty years ago.

I need your help to send me to Washington to continue fighting for our natural resources.

Please click here to donate to my campaign.

Statewide LGBT Organization Recognizes Historic Campaign Opportunity

Florida Together, a statewide organization dedicated to securing equal rights and protections for all Floridians, today announced its support of Scott Galvin in the campaign for Congress in Florida’s 17th District.

“Scott’s campaign represents a truly historic opportunity to add needed diversity to Florida’s elected leadership and we’re proud and excited to offer our full support,” said Michael Kenny, Florida Together’s Executive Director. “Florida has never elected an openly gay Floridian to any office in either Tallahassee or Washington and we can not afford to sit on the sidelines and watch this opportunity go by.”

Florida Together’s support, means Galvin will be highlighted and promoted statewide and introduced to more than 80 local political, social and service organizations which are Florida Together Federation members. As an officially supported candidate, Galvin will be promoted in organization communications and supported with financial resources and volunteers. Florida Together has created a donation page at ActBlue where individuals can donate directly to Galvin’s campaign www.actblue.com/page/gavinfloridalgbt.

“I am delighted and humbled to have the support of Florida Together,” Galvin said. “I am thrilled at their pioneering leadership in recognizing this truly unique opportunity not just for Florida but for the nation.”

Galvin faces eight other Democrats in the August 24th Democratic primary to succeed Congressman Kendrick Meek, who is running for the U.S. Senate.

Galvin is a City Commissioner in North Miami. He was first elected in 1999, was a classroom teacher in Miami schools and has a Bachelor’s Degree in Education from Florida International University. Today Scott is Vice President of Education for the non-profit Junior Achievement of Greater Miami where he recruits and trains corporate volunteers to bring lessons of finance and community to area students.

Galvin also served two terms as President of the Greater North Miami Chamber of Commerce and currently serves on the Board of the Florida Marlins Foundation and the international Board of the AIDS Healthcare Foundation – the largest provider of HIV/AIDS healthcare.

Florida Together is the advocacy and political arm of Florida Together Federation, a federation of over eighty Florida organizations committed to equality and justice for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender Floridians.
