STATEMENT REGARDING BIGOTED SIGN VANDALISM

“I am deeply disappointed and disgusted by the hateful and bigoted attacks directed at me and my campaign for Congress.

“Bigotry cannot be tolerated. It’s always wrong regardless of the circumstance and this most recent example only reinforces my profound, personal commitment to equality for everyone.

“Serving our entire community has always been my goal and I am committed to continuing my service to my home town and neighbors. I will not allow the mean spirited work of the narrow minded to distract me from this campaign or drag the focus away from what this district and our nation need.”

My History of Standing for the Environment

I’ve been involved in environmental causes long before this oil disaster.

In 2007, I initiated the creation of the Arch Creek East Environmental Preserve.  My legislation permanently locked down 13-acres of bayfront property as a nature habitat.  It can never be developed.  We’re working to add additional native plantings and restoring its mangroves.

The Sierra Club of Miami in 2001 awarded me their Environmental Leadership Award for similar legislation protecting the Enchanted Forest Park.  In other efforts, I’ve advocated to keep Arch Creek Park open and was a member of the Friends of the Oleta River organization beginning twenty years ago.

Democratic primary elections for the 17th Congressional District will be held on Tuesday, August 24th.

Broward County Property Appraiser Lori Parrish endorsed North Miami Councilman Scott Galvin in the race for Congress in District 17 which covers parts of Broward and Miami-Dade Counties. Click here for a map of the full district.

“I am honored and humbled to have Lori’s endorsement,” Galvin said. “Her energy and attention to providing great public service are great examples to follow and are values I will take to Washington.”

Lori Parrish was elected Broward County Property Appraiser in 2004 and re-elected in 2008. Before serving as Appraiser, Parrish served four years on the Broward County School Board and in 1988 was elected to the Broward County Commission where she served three times as Chair and was re-elected in 1992, 1996 and 2000.

Parrish joins Broward County Mayor Ken Keechl and others who have also given Galvin their backing.

Democratic primary elections for the 17th Congressional District will be held on Tuesday, August 24th.

On May 20th, our local NBC 6 ran a 2-minute-long story on the race for District 17.  Councilman Galvin was interviewed and spoke about the importance of returning the teaching profession to respectability.

Florida Together, a statewide organization dedicated to securing equal rights and protections for all Floridians, today announced its support of Scott Galvin in the campaign for Congress in Florida’s 17th District.

“Scott’s campaign represents a truly historic opportunity to add needed diversity to Florida’s elected leadership and we’re proud and excited to offer our full support,” said Michael Kenny, Florida Together’s Executive Director. “Florida has never elected an openly gay Floridian to any office in either Tallahassee or Washington and we can not afford to sit on the sidelines and watch this opportunity go by.”

Galvin faces eight other Democrats in the August 24th Democratic primary to succeed Congressman Kendrick Meek, who is running for the U.S. Senate.

Galvin is a City Commissioner in North Miami. He was first elected in 1999, was a classroom teacher in Miami schools and has a Bachelor’s Degree in Education from Florida International University. Today Scott is Vice President of Education for the non-profit Junior Achievement of Greater Miami where he recruits and trains corporate volunteers to bring lessons of finance and community to area students.

Galvin also served two terms as President of the Greater North Miami Chamber of Commerce and currently serves on the Board of the Florida Marlins Foundation and the international Board of the AIDS Healthcare Foundation – the largest provider of HIV/AIDS healthcare.
